Instructions for Managing an Overheating Vehicle
If you’re driving down the road and notice that your vehicle’s thermostat is maxed out, what should you do? For starters, you should immediately pull over, turn on your hazard lights and turn off your vehicle. Then you should let it cool down for at least 10 minutes and open the vehicle’s hood to provide airflow. Once it’s cooled down, you should turn the ignition to the first position—not yet starting the engine—to see what the temperature gauge reads. If the engine temperature has not dropped, consider calling a tow truck rather than driving with an overheating engine, as it can result in severe damage to your vehicle. Let’s go through instructions for managing an overheating vehicle below!
Why is my engine overheating?
There are several symptoms that can lead to an engine overheating. First, check that your vehicle has enough coolant and that there is not a leak, blockage or malfunction keeping the coolant from properly circulating. Next, check to make sure the car thermostat is working effectively, and that the engine has enough oil to stay properly lubricated and cool. Then, check to see that the radiator cooling fan is running and is circulating at the correct level. Worn out or burnt hoses, loose or broken belts, a warped head gasket or several other complications can lead to the overheating of an engine.
If you have completed the steps listed above and are still unable to determine what is causing your vehicle’s engine to overheat, consider taking it to a trusted mechanic. If you allow your engine to overheat without fixing the problem, your vehicle’s head gasket can become warped or ruined, which can be very expensive to repair.
